That’s an overwhelming majority. And it’s something that you should keep in mind as the battle for the soul of America plays out.
The moment that RGB passed from this life and into the next was the moment that Republicans lost the Senate. While America is mourning the loss of one of it’s great judicial champions, the Republicans should be mourning the loss of their Senate majority. And maybe privately they are.
Several Republican Senators were already losing their races; McSally and Gardner are close to being written off. Tillis and Collins are at the breaking point. A poll out of Iowa this weekend shows Ernst down three to Theresa Greenfield. Bullock is currently up by just one in the latest high quality poll out of Montana. According to Quinnipiac, Graham is tied with Harrison in South Carolina.
Before Friday the odds were against Republicans holding the Senate. No matter what they do now, the odds are about to get significantly worse.
If these Senators (and others not listed above) move forward with confirmation hearings, yes I wrote hearings, on a new Supreme Court Justice, they will lose the moderate voters they need to retain their seats. If they go against trump and decline to hold hearings before the election, they will lose enough trump supporters that many of these Senators will have no hope of winning their elections.
It’s a no win scenario.
And confirmation of a new Justice before the election will destroy Republican campaigns in enough states to give the Democrats upwards of 55 — 45 majority.
I know it looks dark now, but remember it always is darkest just before the dawn.
